Understanding Grief & Loss

Grief is a natural response to loss, encompassing a wide range of emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations. While grief is often associated with the death of a loved one, it can also arise from other types of losses, including:

  • Concrete physical losses, such as the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, the loss of a job or career, or the loss of a home or possessions. 

  • Ambiguous losses may include the loss of a missing person, the loss of a relationship due to estrangement or divorce, or the loss of a sense of self or identity after a major life change or transition.

  • Expected losses are those that we anticipate and prepare for, such as the death of an elderly parent or a planned relocation. 

  • Unexpected losses are those that occur suddenly and without warning. Examples of unexpected losses may include accidents, sudden illnesses, or natural disasters.

Life is full of transitions, both big and small, that can trigger feelings of grief and loss. These transitions may include relationship changes, career transitions, parenthood, health challenges, aging and resulting life changes. We offer specialized support in some of these areas.
